Choosing the Right DHT Blocker
Most male hair loss products today focus on blocking an androgen called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This is important because DHT is commonly believed to be the cause of the most prevalent type of hair loss in men called androgenetic alopecia. DHT is a byproduct of the reaction between testosterone and an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. When levels of DHT become too high they bind to androgen receptors on hair follicles and cause the follicles to go into a resting phase. Over time DHT weakens the hair follicles causing them to thin and fall out resulting in a receding hair line. A treatment for male hair loss should focus on blocking DHT and lowering its production in the body.
Should a DHT Blocker be Systemic or Topical?
Many of the DHT fighting hair loss treatments available today are either an orally taken system supplement or a topically applied treatment. The most effective dihydrotestosterone blockers will use both. While an orally taken supplement can help lower the production of DHT and help block androgen receptors a topical treatment can help fight the negative effects of DHT on the hair follicles. Using a system with both systemic and topical components fights DHT from both sides for faster and more reliable results.
